February 15, 2011: Legislative Update

Last modified Oct 24, 2013 03:02 PM

The House Education committee met this morning at 10:00 and discussed at length H48, removal of non-federally required tests.  By a voice vote, they approved the bill.  I expect it will now go to the full House for a vote (rather than referred to another committee).  A number of legislators shared our concerns about removing these tests while we are in the process of developing the new curriculum and assessment programs.  We were asked to share more information on the accountability and assessment program and its future directions.  We intend to share this information soon.

The Governor will be presenting her budget at a press conference on Thursday at 10:00.  She will then share it in the joint full appropriations committees at 1:00 on Thursday.  Governor Perdue's State of the State address is available at:  http://www.governor.state.nc.us/eTownhall/Blog/post/2011/post/2011/02/14/Read-Gov-Perdues-speech.aspx

This morning in the Joint Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, Brian Matteson of the Fiscal Research Division reviewed the public schools base budget.  Tomorrow he will respond to any questions from today's session  and review the DPI budget.  Today's presentation is available on our website at http://legislative.ncpublicschools.gov/resources-for-legislators
